Day trip to Maramures from Cluj-Napoca

Discover the unique heritage of Maramureș, a region renowned for its wooden architecture, rich traditions and fascinating history. This full-day excursion takes you to remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites, historic landmarks and some of the most picturesque landscapes in northern Romania.

The tour begins at the meeting point in Cluj-Napoca, followed by a drive to the village of Săpânța, home to the famous Merry Cemetery. One of Romania's most distinctive attractions, the cemetery is known for its colourful wooden crosses decorated with hand-painted scenes and humorous epitaphs that celebrate the lives of the local people.

Next, you'll travel through the scenic Gutâi Pass to Sighetu Marmației, one of the most important towns in the Maramureș region. Here, you'll visit the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance, located in a former political prison. The museum offers a moving insight into Romania's communist past and the stories of those who suffered under the regime. Afterwards, you'll have free time for lunch.

The final stop is the remarkable Wooden Church of Șurdești, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of traditional wooden church architecture in Maramureș.

After the visit, you'll return to Cluj-Napoca.
